Examining the Interaction of Caregiver Involvement, Video Game Use, and Caregiver-Child Relationships: Implications for Social-Emotional Functioning in Children

Carmela DiFlorio, Pace University

Abstract

This research aims to explore the relationships between caregiver involvement in video game use, the caregiver-child relationship, and children's social-emotional functioning. Utilizing a sample of 96 caregivers of children aged 5-11 years, the study implemented an online survey to collect data. Through Pearson's product-moment correlation analyses, the research examined five primary research questions. The findings reveal a negative correlation between caregiver co-play and positive views on video game usage. No statistically significant correlations were found between caregiver involvement in video game play and conflictual caregiver-child relationships, caregiver screen time and video game use in children, or video game usage in children and positive social-emotional functioning. However, a small positive correlation was found between video game usage in children and negative social-emotional functioning. The results partially support the initial hypotheses, highlighting the need for further comprehensive research. The study has valuable implications for understanding contemporary family dynamics, particularly related to digital media usage. The limitations of the study, primarily related to its demographic representation, highlight directions for future research.
