In order to become a member of Pace Environmental Law Review (PELR) you must apply by participating in Pace’s Unified Law Review Writing Competition and be selected at the end of your first year. PELR requires either a one or two-year commitment. Only Associates that sign-on for a two-year commitment are eligible to run for an Editorial Board position in their second year.
The following is a list of rules governing qualification for PELR adapted from the Pace Environmental Law Review Bylaws:
(A) Required Participation
The journals have agreed that participation in the writing competition is a precondition to consideration for journal membership.
(B) Standing Based Eligibility
All three journals have agreed that there are three groups of students eligible to write-on to law review: (1) rising full-time 2Ls (i.e., the full-time class of 2012); (2) rising part-time 2Ls and rising part-time 3Ls; and (3) transfer students who, upon admission to Pace, would meet either of the foregoing descriptions. PELR will also consider as possible candidates those upper level students who participate in the writing competition and who are: (1) rising part-time 4Ls; (2) rising full-time 3Ls; or (3) transfer students who, upon admission to Pace, would meet either of the foregoing descriptions. In the case of an upper-level student who “writes on” to PELR such student will be eligible for non-board positions only (i.e., he or she may be an “Associate” only unless the students is a part time student and has a second or additional year at Pace).
(C) Rank Based Eligibility
Any student in the top 40% of his or her graduating class may participate in the write-on competition. No one other than a person in the top 40% of his or her graduating class will be eligible for journal membership. Regardless of a student’s eligibility to participate in the competition, each journal will retain full discretion regarding selection of its membership.
(D) Timing of Selection
The writing competition for all students other than transfer students will be held immediately after 1L spring finals. Other current Pace students (i.e., everyone else except transfers) should participate at that time, as well.
Note: Invitation to join PELR is based on a combination of GPA, class rank, and performance in the Writing Competition. There is no guarantee that any candidates will be selected based upon the writing competition.
First year students with questions regarding the application process should contact either the Editor-in-Chief or the Managing Editor.
